Corporate e-waste: an easy guide to disposing of it
Share
The production of electronic waste - defined by the acronym WEEE - in today's society is becoming an increasingly complex and pressing problem. The enormous and overabundant use that is made of it, a consequence of an increasingly electronic and digitalized world, certainly requires strict legislation that regulates disposal operations.
If you are a business owner and are wondering how to dispose of your commercial e-waste, this guide will clear up any doubts.
Electronic waste: some data
According to the 2020 Global E-Waste monitor report, the production of electronic waste in 2019 was as high as 53.6 tons . While, based on data released by the UN, we can say that each person produces an average of seven kilos of waste.
Obsolescence of electronic waste
But why are so many of them produced?
The reason is not only due to the widespread digitalization that invades every aspect of our daily lives; but also to the very nature of this type of waste.
All electronic equipment is in fact subject to the inevitable law of obsolescence .
They get old quickly; and are destined to become WEEE within a few years.
WEEE disposal: the legislation
As regards their disposal, there are very strict regulations to follow.
The legislation complies with Legislative Decree no. 49 of 14 March 2014 , implemented on the basis of Directive 19 of 2012 , established by the European Union .
In addition to this, there is the extension launched by Open Scope , which broadens the scope of
significantly the objects that fall within the category of WEEE.
Household and professional electronic waste
In a broader sense, the legislation classifies WEEE based on their origin: distinguishing between domestic and professional electronic waste .
The difference lies in their disposal method.
While those for domestic use can be transported to municipal collection points designated for the
disposal, professional ones must be disposed of by relying on specific authorised centres.
The advice, for those who have a company, is to use third parties who deal, precisely, with the disposal of professional electronic waste.
This is because the legislation is rather complex and difficult to interpret ; the possibility of incurring sanctions is very frequent.
Such waste contains highly dangerous polluting substances, the disposal of which requires rather complex and sophisticated operations.
Incentives for the disposal of corporate electronic waste
Responsibility for the management of WEEE concerns both the company that uses them and the company that produces them.
All equipment included in the assets, by companies, are subject to the disposal rules dictated by the legislation . Furthermore, always from the book of company assets, there is the possibility of deducting the disposal costs, and of taking advantage of special discounts for the TARI.
If necessary, it is mandatory to fill out a specific form stipulated between the company producing the waste and the one dealing with its disposal.
